Strathendrick 0 -- 7 Lenzie

Scottish Hydro League 6th November 2010 Strathendrick 0 -- 7 Lenzie

Similar to a couple of local football teams, both Lenzie and hosts Strathendrick had secured record-breaking winning runs from the start of the season. ‘Endrick had scored many tries en-route to their 7 victories but they were up against the meanest defence in the league and Lenzie were determined to maintain their low points against total. Lenzie started well and exerted pressure but were unable to cross the home line. Both teams lost players to injury, first Kerr for the homesters then Lenzie’s McLean. The visiting line-out had been doing well but the loss reduced their options although the versatile Derrick slotted in well at 4 and T Letford came on and performed well. Strathendrick came into the game in the period before halftime but the Lenzie defence kept them out with some gutsy tackles. The second half was virtually all Lenzie as they maintained field position and pressured the hosts defence. Forward passes were to hamper both sides but generally both teams handled well. After 20 minutes a superb tackle and turnover of the home centre, Emmerson, by D Wood gave Lenzie possession 40 meters out. A well-weighted pass from Queenan to young McBride left the winger with a bit to do but he finished well and Scouller converted for 7-0. On a rare foray into Lenzie territory Strathendrick were awarded a penalty which was missed by Duncan. Lenzie attacked again and Scouller also had a miss but he and his back row colleagues McManus and Cameron were turning over ball well and Matier and A Wood were to the fore in pick and drives. Some neat handling by Fraser, Kennedy and McWilliams nearly resulted in a try but the home defence held on. Endrick never made it into Lenzie’s 22 in the whole second half and the visitors were relieved when the one chance of a breakout was spurned when the wrong option was taken. Lenzie finished the game in the home half with Kennedy and Lindsay going close to adding to the score. The win puts Lenzie 3 points behind their hosts with a game in hand. Lenzie deserved their narrow win and the 18 players who made their way home over the Campsies are to be congratulated for their effort, teamwork and commitment. A word for the home team - they never gave up and showed why they are topping the table. There is now a break in league fixtures which will hopefully allow injuries to heal. Captain McNeish and coach Kennedy are determined to ensure there is no complacency in the squad and will make use of the break to work on fitness and skills. The second XV had a narrow defeat to East Kilbride.
