Lenzie 0 - 3 Strathendrick
Strathendrick shade Top of Table clash
Scottish Hydro Electric League West 1
Saturday 5March 2011
LENZIE 0 ---- 3 STRATHENDRICK
This eagerly awaited clash between the 2 league leaders was expected to be a close encounter as the corresponding fixture at Fintry had resulted in a 7-0 win for Lenzie.
This proved to be the case with both defences on top and scoring chances were few. Lenzie kicked off with the slight breeze and were trying to spin the ball out to their wingers. A mixture of inaccurate final passes, good cover tackling and apparent forward passes contrived to prevent them scoring. Strathendrick came more into the game as the half wore on and some accurate kicking gave them some good positions. Lenzie’s scrum was on top at this stage and Letford and Williams took 3 against the head. However, the visitors line-out gradually got on top of Lenzie as the game wore on. Greenock missed a couple of penalties in the first half and it was 0-0 at the interval. ‘Endrick started well in the second period and rumbled into the Lenzie 22 on several occasions and were held up over the line once. Greenock missed 2 more penalties for Strathendrick but Lenzie shot themselves in the foot by conceding another on their ‘22’ and the visiting scrum-half made no mistake with this one. 3-0 to the visitors. The score remained like this and Strathendrick forwards and half-backs maintained their position in the Lenzie half which made it hard for the home team to create scoring chances. One did come to Scouller with a penalty attempt from 39m but it fell agonisingly short. In truth a draw was no good to Lenzie and they really went for the win near the end. After a Brodie chip was cleared away from McBride, Lenzie won the line-out and were driving to the visitors line when the maul stopped and ‘no side’ was blown. So the visitors cemented their place at the top and they are unlikely to be caught now. Both teams are still in the Bowl and it would be nice to meet for a decider in the Final – Dream on!
On pitch 2 Lenzie 2XV eased their relegation worries with a last minute win by 25-24 over Helensburgh. This game was notable for the single digit difference and the 4 Lenzie tries being scored by under-18s Hunter and Thomas.
Next week Lenzie make the journey to RAF Kinloss for the Bowl quarter final (places available on the bus) while the Second XV are at home to Dumfries.
