Argyll vs Glenzie
Epic Battle in Oban
Argyll U16 19
Glenzie U16 17
In the sunshine of a crisp autumn afternoon these well matched teams slugged out what proved to be an epic battle. It was always going to be tough game and the spectators were treated to a display of hard fought rugby. Glenzie opened the score early when Haddock blasted his way over the line from a tap penalty on the 5m line. The visitors continued to exert pressure and were unlucky not to exploit an overlap created by their formidable forwards. Watson widened the lead, finishing off a clever kick and chase by Don. Both sides continued to battle hard and Argyll eventually caught Glenzie briefly napping from a tap penalty on the 5m line to make the half time score 12-7 to Glenzie.
The second half started with just as much energy and commitment, but Glenzie failed to learn from earlier warnings and were caught out when the Argyll No 8 picked up at the back of the scrum and ran in on the blindside, the conversion taking them 2 points ahead. The Glenzie forwards of Haddock, Shannahan and Paul turned the screws at the breakdowns and started to force errors from Argyll and a resultant scrum found Don clear on the wing to fly in for a third try to the visitors, converted by Cruikshanks. Time and again Argyll threatened and the Glenzie defence stood firm until 3 minutes from time when the home side shipped the ball wide and squeezed into the corner, and the lead. Following the restart the match ended abruptly in the final play, due to injury, and Glenzie were left to ponder what might have been had the game run its full course.
A great game for players and spectators alike.
Next match is away to Cumbernauld on Sunday 30th Nov.
